Oman – Undiscovered Gem of the Gulf

Published Monday, 4 June 2018 by Salman Zia

Nestled between Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the sea, people might overlook this relatively small country on the south-eastern coast of Arabia, but they risk losing out on the unique experiences Oman has to offer. With a population of just under 5 million, Oman is a revelation: offering not only an antidote to the glitz and glamour of Dubai, but also a series of astonishing panoramas, from grand mosques to majestic mountain ranges. Recommended for travellers seeking a more authentic Arabian experience, Royal Travel is proud to offer holiday and travel packages to Oman. Just call or visit one of our shops to arrange a trip today.

What to do

A great place to start your trip is the capital city, Muscat. The newly unveiled opera house and national museum are a wonderful place to soak up some culture, but visitors are also encouraged to visit Old Muscat and the Old Palace. However, the main attraction is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which occupies more than 4,000,000 (Four Million) square feet, and is home to the world’s second largest chandelier. Despite these extravagances, and the acres of glittery white marble, the mosque still serves as an active place of worship, not just a fantasy one.

Where to Stay

The Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah resort, only a 15-minute drive away from the capital, offers a spectacular experience thanks to its three separate hotels set between a backdrop of majestic mountains and the deep turquoise waters of the Oman Sea. With a wide selection of restaurants and gift shops at the resort, you may find yourself reluctant to leave.

The Al Waha hotel offers traditional Dhofari architecture and swimming pools merged into a serene oasis. There is even a lazy river and the Al Waha is particularly suited to families. The Al Bandar hotel contains a variety of fine restaurants and a gift shop, meaning that you can buy anything from a lamb kebab to a gold necklace. The palatial Al Husn is the most luxurious of the three hotels, and offers rooms like ‘an Arabian palace’ for the most discerning of customers.
